Humanitarian and Social Projects

Introduction

The International Buddhist Foundation (IBF) is committed each year to humanitarian and social initiatives aimed at supporting vulnerable individuals, both in Sri Lanka and in Switzerland. This page presents the project currently underway, as well as an overview of the main initiatives carried out in previous years.

Ongoing Project – 2025–2026

Rehabilitation of the Murapola Ela Irrigation Canal (Sri Lanka)

In 2025 and 2026, IBF has decided to support the rehabilitation of the Murapola Ela irrigation canal, located in the Central Province of Sri Lanka. Cyclone Ditwah caused severe flooding, leading to the collapse and blockage of several sections of the canal and preventing water from reaching agricultural areas. More than 1,100 farming families, along with approximately 1,500 families indirectly dependent on the irrigation system, have seen their livelihoods severely affected.

The project involves removing debris, repairing damaged structures, strengthening canal walls, and restoring water flow to the most distant areas. These efforts will help revive agricultural activity, improve food security, and support the long-term stability of the affected communities.

More details regarding the implementation and financial aspects of the project will be published on this page at a later date.

Main Initiatives of Previous Years

2024 – Support for the Nissarana Vanaya Centre

In 2024, IBF provided financial support to the spiritual centre Nissarana Vanaya in Sri Lanka. This contribution assists the monastic community, helps maintain the monastery, and supports ongoing spiritual activities. It reflects IBF’s commitment to promoting meditation, inner peace, and Buddhist values.

2023 – Support for the Prenatal Unit of Trincomalee Hospital

In 2023, IBF donated feeding tubes for premature infants to the hospital in Trincomalee, helping improve the care provided to newborns requiring specialised support. This contribution strengthened essential medical equipment dedicated to vulnerable infants.

2022 – “Helping Hand” Project for 100 Families in Kandy

In 2022, IBF participated in the “Helping Hand” initiative, enabling the distribution of food parcels to 100 disadvantaged families in several underserved areas of Kandy, Sri Lanka. Funds raised in Geneva during an event helped provide concrete support to families affected by the severe economic crisis.

2021 – Distribution of Essential Items for Pregnant Women (Sri Lanka)

In 2021, IBF carried out a pilot project, initiated by our resident monk, to distribute essential items to pregnant women facing vulnerability in Sri Lanka. This initiative offered vital support to expectant mothers during a challenging social and economic period.

2020 – Food Aid During the COVID-19 Crisis (Geneva)

In 2020, in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, IBF provided financial support to a local Geneva-based organisation delivering food assistance to people facing hardship. This contribution strengthened emergency aid efforts during a particularly critical time.
